I wish I could be so good. During the last move (from Canada to US) I parted with almost half of my books. They still are way too many. Plus my husband's ones, which he needs for work (or so he says :-)

I'm not so brave. I have stacks of ARCs, bookshelves full of print books I cannot part with, and a garage full of boxes of books. I think that when I finally open my own bookstore, I'll sell them (but not all).

The books are really good for the kids, I love to buy those kinds of books. The Children's books about nature are good for the kids. I am sure they will enjoy the good stories that will also give lessons to learn for the cute kids.

Nice to see Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter listed. Another terrific novel along similar aesthetic lines is Galveston, by Nic Pizzolatto, published by Scribner and given a glowing review by Dennis Lehane in the NYTBR. I pair it w/ Franklin's book because of the quality of the writing and characterization similarly brings emotional heft to a work that both fully satisfies and transcends the requirements of noir.

There is one thing that Third Place and every other brick-and-motar book store will always have over Amazon: instant gratification. I think of the slightly higher price as a convenience fee. It is worth it to me to be able to read a book immediately after I buy it, not 3-5 business days later (or more if I want free shipping). Great article, Autumn.

Thank you, Jessica! Love the quote you chose for the end. I'm looking forward to Roald Dahl, day, too! He was undoubtedly my first love as far as favorite authors go, and I owe my appreciation of his fine work to my 4th grade teacher - she had us read everything from BFG to James and the Giant Peach, Matilda to The Twits and back. Though he is gone, his exceptional wit will stand the test of time, sculpting our imaginations in fanciful and mischievous ways. Why, if it weren't for Mr. Dahl, who else would've told us to blame a whizzpop on too much frobscottle? :-)

Albeit, this isn't a book but there is a fantastic baking blog called Honey & Jam that I highly recommend. Everything from no-knead french bread (yeah - I bet you didn't know that even existed!) to cherry rosemary scones (will be trying these out this weekend). And no, I'm not pimping this blog because it's my own... I just genuinely love the recipes. Plus the great photography skills of Hannah, aka Honey and Jam Queen B, makes it a treat to the eyes as well as the tastebuds. :-) www.honeyandjam.com
